From one King to another. @snowking_yk and @s_nobudy were a huge inspiration for Dead North founding member @jaybulckaert, Dead North filmmaker @erikanyyssonen and Dead North visual effects artist @lucasartgreen graphic novel, King Warrior. The Snowking and his crew have encouraged an entire town (and beyond) to reconnect with their childhood wonder for over 25 years now and we are forever grateful. All hail the Monarchy. @lucasartgreen @erikanyyssonen

The real reason we are taking a break...there was only room for 8 posters on our wall (jokes, but ironic)

The real reason we are taking a break...there was only room for 8 posters on our wall (jokes, but ironic)

DeadNorth is taking a break for a while.

Deadlies and fans of Dead North, there is no way to sugar coat this or soften the blow, so we will just be direct; we have decided to give the Dead North Film Festival a rest for the foreseeable future. We know this comes as a shock to many of you and are sorry for that. The 2021 festival would have dramatically changed this year anyways due to COVID-19 restrictions and was no doubt going to negatively impact Dead North. The reality is that our decision to put it to bed has been on our minds for a long time. We were considering this even before the pandemic occurred.

Organizing Dead North for nearly a decade now has been one of the greatest honours and privileges of our careers. We could not have done it without our core funders (the GNWT and the NWT Arts Council), our board members over the years (Jay Bulckaert, Pablo Saravanja, Meagan Wohlberg, Mandee McDonald, Pat Kane, Loren McGinnis and Andrew Silke) and our family of friends, partners, volunteers and sponsors. We are tired. It’s time for us to take a break, catch our breath and refocus our energy. This could mean Dead North goes away for a year, or maybe two (or five, or...?). In truth, we don't know right now. It is not dead though (wink wink), merely resting for a while, like a Lovecraftian beast, just below the surface, biding time until an inevitable, terrible and triumphant return.

As always, Dead North wouldn't exist without all the filmmakers who made 220 films over the life of this beautiful experiment. These films travelled far and wide, and together, we showed the world that Northern genre filmmaking is a force to be reckoned with. This festival changed so many lives for the better all across the North, and it certainly changed ours. We are deeply proud of our Dead North community. You are the stuff of legend, and we thank you all for coming out to play with us for the last eight years.

It has been the wildest of rides.

Stay Deadly,

@deadnorthfilmfestival

Sweet fancy Moses on buttered toast, the night has finally arrived to show the CO-VIDeo Quest film. It will be premiering tonight at our co-sponsored Drive-In movie event with @cabinradio, @wampnwt, Pido Productions and @ouryellowknife. If you can’t make it to see what all the rejoicing is about, we will be releasing it online tomorrow. Thanks to all the people who submitted films, this was pure joy to make.

And a bit of a spicy one to get your engines started here after a long weekend. @andrewjsilke took the CO-VIDeo Quest into some cheeky territory. It’s so fun to see the creativity roll in. Tennis will never be the same.
