Two billion people – more than six out of ten workers in the world – work in the informal economy. The ILO estimates that some 1.6 billion of these workers have been significantly impacted by the #COVID19 pandemic. For many, it boils down to breaking out of the informal economy. How can this happen? One promising solution relies on #technology to help the formal/informal economy divide. Listen to our new podcast episode to learn more. Full episode via the link in bio.

Hugely valuable both economically and as a part of nature, Kithul (or Fishtail palm) trees support rural livelihoods and increase flood resilience in disaster-prone areas of Sri Lanka. ILO is working with rural communities to keep Kithul farmers safe and this important industry alive. Follow @ilocolombo for more such stories. #WorldEnvironmentDay #trees #nature #livelihood

Hear the breakdown of the latest world of work trend report - released yesterday. Sukti Dasgupta, Chief Employment Labour Markets and Youth, says young people are badly impacted not just due to unemployment but more due to inactivity. It is a reminder that the labour market crisis created by the #COVID19 pandemic is far from over. Employment growth will be insufficient to make up for the losses suffered until at least 2023.
205 million people are expected to be unemployed in 2022, compared to 187 million people in 2019. The highest rate since 2013. Check out the new ILO report. Link is in the bio.
