The So-Cal Special, created by the founder of the original So-Cal Speed Shop, Alex Xydias, is the most famous of the belly tanks built. It began toppling records as soon as it hit the salt flats and dry lakes, but its most memorable performance came in 1952 at Bonneville when the car shattered five class records using three different Ford flathead engines.

Can you guess the top speed of this Belle Tank Racer?

Designed as economical transport for urban errands, the fiberglass-bodied Electric Shopper was produced by the Electric Car Company of California, which had manufactured electric vehicles since the 1950s. Much like a European microcar, the Electric Shopper, with its low power and small size, was designed for low-speed short-distance travel around cities. As it lacked a traditional steering wheel, the car’s speed was regulated a vertical bar which was pushed forward to accelerate and pulled backward to brake. Describe this car in an emoji!!

The Porsche Type 64 60K10 is the progenitor of all Porsches and the foundation of the Porsche aesthetic. It was built to compete in the 1939 Berlin-Rome endurance race, which was canceled due to the outbreak of war. A mere three identical cars were built, each of which used a Volkswagen platform and a streamlined aluminum body designed by Erwin Komenda and crafted by Reutter. This car was reconstructed of major components from the second Type 64, which had been dismantled after World War II.

Equipped with a 470-horsepower Chevrolet V-8 and four-wheel independent suspension, the Reboot Buggy was built up from common salvage yard parts that were assembled using basic tools and Ruiter’s welding expertise. Defined by what it is not as much as what it is, the Reboot Buggy exemplifies Ruiter’s method of creating the desired aesthetic by first deconstructing, then reconceptualizing a “timeless” design.

State-of-the-art for its day, the Greer-Black-Prudhomme dragster was one of the most beautiful ever built and also the most successful. Tuned by Keith Black and driven by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, it immediately dominated the drag racing circuit and consistently ran the quarter mile in under eight seconds, at speeds in excess of 190 miles per hour. With an unparalleled record of 237 wins and only 4 losses, the Top Fuel racer was acquired by Bruce Meyer as the ultimate example of a pioneering-era dragster.

Though many custom and tuning styles feature racing influences, the Works style is one of the most expressly race-inspired styles. DNA Garage, based in Santa Ana, California, built this homage to famed Japanese motorcycle and racecar driver Yoshimi Katayama. A factory driver for Mazda, Katayama’s RX-3 Savanna was distinguished by its large fender flares and green and yellow livery. The interior was stripped of all extra weight, leaving only a single bucket seat, custom roll cage constructed by RAD Industries, and a Racepak dash.

When director Robert Zemeckis and Robert Gale conceived of the first film, the DeLorean was cast, in part, because the car’s gullwing doors made it look like an alien spaceship. Over the course of the two sequels, the Time Machine eventually emerged as a character of its own, undergoing progressive transformation as a result of its time travel experiences. Three visually distinct DeLoreans were created for the trilogy, however, this is the only example to appear in all three films.

Introduced in 1986, the Porsche 959 won immediate acclaim as “the world’s fastest” and most technologically advanced road-going production car built up to that time. Its twin-turbocharged engine and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system transferred power to the road in a way that improved traction under all conditions, while features like run-flat tires and a shatter-resistant windshield helped increase the car’s safety at high speeds. To keep weight as low as possible, the 959’s body was built from an aluminum and Kevlar composite.

The Nissan Silvia CSP311 was an early attempt at a personal car, exhibiting unique design elements by an international design team that included Albrecht Goertz. Each car was handbuilt on a Fairlady chassis to customer specifications, and its “crisp-cut” design of gentle, paper- like folds made it an immediate classic. The Silvia is today a notable example of design-centered craftsmanship and can be considered a predecessor of one of Nissan’s most legendary cars, the 240Z.

Its “FC” model name denoting a forward-control cockpit, the body and frame of this four-wheel-drive Jeep were modified, updated, and refurbished by Daystar for the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, one of the largest new product showcase events in Las Vegas. It features 88 Series Mattracks, a conversion introduced in 1994 that replaces each tire with a separate rubber track system. Now popular for recreational, commercial, agricultural, and emergency vehicle use, the system gives four-wheel-drive vehicles vastly increased mobility over the most extreme terrain.

Porsche introduced the 550/1500 RS Spyder at the 1953 Paris Auto Show. Designed specially for racing, 550 Spyders met with success in the hands of both Porsche Werks team members and privateers. Although 90 Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyders were produced between 1953 and 1956, few have survived intact because they were modified for competition and driven hard.

“Yeah baby, yeah!” This Volkswagen New Beetle example was specifically modified for the 1999 film, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, where it appeared as a time machine that allowed Austin Powers to return to 1969, and this Beetle evoked the spirit of the 1960’s with its wild paint patterns and ability to fold the roof down.

New Zealand native Bruce McLaren built a series of thinly disguised all-out racing cars such as this one. Although powered by a production-derived aluminum Chevrolet V-8 engine, they bore little resemblance to any stock vehicle. Its special bodywork, purpose-built chassis, wide wheels, and high performance engine distinguish the McLaren M8F as a testament to a short-lived series of no-holds-barred racing.

Driven by the villain Zao in the James Bond movie Die Another Day, this sporty and luxurious convertible appears stock, but was actually heavily modified for filming. For the dramatic chase scene on ice, both Zao’s Jaguar and James Bond’s Aston Martin were rebuilt on shortened Ford Explorer four-wheel drive chassis for improved grip and better handling on the slippery surface.
