Mini tiger...

This spider has no relation with the tiger whatsoever but first thing I remembered was a tiger after seeing the pattern on its back.
Its an Orb weaving spider, builds its web at night to capture the preys. As the sun raises they will eat up the web and go to their retreave to rest!. But this spider was sitting on this branch and the web was intact when I saw it in the broad daylight, which was unusual.

A colourful Flatid planthopper

Eventhough some of the planthoppers are colourful and enigmatic like this one, there are other species of them which will create headache to the agriculturists by acting as pests for their cultivation.

Snow covered Mountains and the Lovely Himalayan Monal..

It was during our Arunachal Pradesh visit, we could experience both the freezing snow beneath our feet and the blissful sighting of the Himalayan Monal.

A green bee eater..

Usually I ignore these birds but this time it is not the case.. I was searching for some other bird and this individual started calling, when I checked, it was hardly 3mts away from me.. I clicked few pics and then it flew away..

A Crab spider and an Ant..

It was first sighting for me of the genus Bomis , a crab spider from Dakshina Kannada and I was trying to take photos of that really active spider. It was trying to escape from my sight, running here and there on the leaf and while running suddenly an ant came in its pathway.. Reaction of the spider can't be predicted but ant definitely got agitated and was ready to give a bite to the intruder..

A unique hunting method..

Many things in nature doesn't have proper explanation. This spider and its hunting technique is also one among them, where, it lacks proper explanation for how and when it developed such an unique hunting behaviour.

This is one species of Bolas spider(probably Ordgarius cf. hobsoni) which is specialized in hunting moths. These spiders are also Araneidae family members but instead of constructing proper webs they use different tactics to catch the prey.
At night they will be active and build a base web from where they will hang and then produce a line of silk thread for which they will attach sticky globules( as seen in first pic) which are known as Bolas, so the name Bolas spider.
Apart from this, a very unique thing about this spider is, they will produce specific chemicals which acts in similar ways of pheromones which are used by female moths to attract the males.
A male moth in search of a female companion gets attracted by the chemicals acting as same as pheromones produced by Bolas spider and approaches it. By hearing the approaching moth the spider becomes alert and starts swirling the silk thread with the Bolas. If the moth is unfortunate enough then it will get trapped in the sticky Bolas and that will be a lucky day for Bolas spider.

There is no proper explanation about the Evolutionary inclusion of this behaviour by the spiders and also the ecology of the spider is less studied. Studies were done in only few species of Bolas spiders about the luring mechanism using pheromone like chemicals and whether it is species specific or not.
So, this spider could be equall interesting for Evolutionary biologists or Spider ecologists.

Swipe for the 2nd image where the spider is feasting on previously caught prey.

An alien creature...

This is nothing but the larvae of some species of Tiger beetle. Adult Tiger beetles are fast runners and fierce hunters but they will be colorful and beautiful too. They will lay their eggs on the mud bunds and the developed larvae will dig a burrow and stay there. Their instincts of hunting will start from that stage itself. And here, mostly they will do wait and charge kind of hunting, when a unsuspected prey arrives near their burrow they charge and capture the prey. The sickle shaped jaws and the hairy head plate makes it scary but if you take it outside the burrow, it will be just looking like any other creepy caterpillar.

There are plenty of caterpillars which makes us feel disgusting, and eventually lead us to kill them since they are pests for various crops and vegetation. But the ones like this will be a treat for eyes. Amazing colours and patterns may indicate something for predators but for me it was a jewel of the nature.
Don't know the id,

Its a no-ball in the beginning and then its a wide...Cricket craze for spider too???!!

Here is an amazing looking crab spider(Thomisidae family) probably belonging to genus Massuria.
The contrasting colours of the body and the texture makes it an interesting and beautiful spider, also making it well camouflaged in its habitat.

Eyes of a fly-1

Eventhough most of the people hate flies, few of them are really beautiful. One such fly with amazingly coloured compound eyes was seen feeding on fruit of some Areca species at Agumbe.
