Westmalle

#westmalle #Trappist #extra - A buzzy beer from the old masters -- Abstract: This is called "paterbier" because it was the beer the monks brewed to drink with their meals, and therefore, as you might imagine, it is quite agreeable overall, insofar as a trappist specialty can hold such a common place in a daily routine, but these monks are about that life. Later to the marketed scene, having previously been bogarted exclusively by the monks (lol), this milder 4.8% dandy is one of the original #beers from within cloister walls, #fresh and spicy with that golden pop and sweet end. A really fantastic addition. If brewing is the laborious gift to the man upstairs, and the drinking is the communing with him, this beer hits the marks, you can imagine monks slurping this out of earthenware jugs to Gregorian chant, it's a whole mood. #thegrearbeerquest #belgianbeer #trappistbeer #abbeybeer #abbey #westmalletrappist #biere #bier #belgie #Belgium #belgia #beerblog #blog #beerdiary #beerreview

Weihenstephaner

#Weihenstephaner #pils - Here's the thing, when I first arrived in Germany in 2003, I saw for the first time the common city taxi cab fleet which was comprised, at the time, of mainly taupe and mustard beige colored Mercedes-Benz sedans with manual windows and door locks, rock-hard black plastic kit and rugged cloth upholstery. Coming from America, where they only import the E and S class type luxury models and above, this was quite shocking to me, the bare fact that these pedestrian, utilitarian items existed full stop, when I had been steeped in the ethos of benzo elitism. Point here is, the Pils is the taxi cab in this story - fine, but why? There are plenty of pils out there that have reached the apotheosis of their style, and roam the streets like a Ford Crown Victoria, the mob boss of all cabs, the pils brewers (Radeberger et al)-- stick to them, and when it comes to Weihenstephaner, stick to the wheat beers - when you can have the Maybach, take the Maybach. #thegreatbeerquest #pilsners #germany #Germanbeer #bavarianbeer #Bavaria #beervana #beerblog #Review

Thornbridge The

#Thornbridge The #colonel - From the Kentucky Colonels ABA basketball team to Colonel Sanders' KFC, many Kentucky centric things have given homage to the/a Colonel, and this beer is no different. This Kentucky Common beer is an old #style that has reemerged on the scene amid this "extreme norm-core" reversion to classic styles, which I absolutely love. This style was popular in the #louisville area and is supposed to be #malted sweet and #brewed up light, and this English made example absolutely is. This is a crushable beer, but very blue collar in a 1980s, Michelob heavy kind of way, I really enjoyed it😆🍺. #britishbeer #englishbeer #kentuckycommon #Darkbeer #beerblog #beerreview #BeerLove #beercan #ale #øl #pivo #cerveza #bier #bière

Haand

#haand #dark #Force - A point of personal privilege for this moderately aged imperial #stout that's not currently on wide release, but is nonetheless great. I was given this bottle as a gift. It is, I believe, either the 2017 or the 2018 based mostly on guidance from labeling runs (no official dating on the bottle where it should be, but this label I think dates to earliest '15) and that the brewer switched to cans in more recent runs. A year or two on it, with wheat yeast and wheat malt, this Russian-adjacent imperial wheat stout is a serious inky, roasty and toasty, mouthfeel symphony. I have yet to try it in the can to compare how it sits, but at 8.5%, this has an open-ended age pocket written all over it, I just couldn't wait🤷‍♂️😆🍺. #norwegianbeer #stouts #Darkbeer #beerblog #beerreview #øl #ølsmaking #beerbottle #independent #breweries #brewing #imperialstout #dark #darkforce

Leffe

#leffe #brune - I had to brainwash myself of any of the existing notions or biases I had towards Leffe as a branded entity for this post, because as an InBev property one has a propensity to fob it off as some sort of corporate pretender because it's brewed on site at Stella Artois in Leuven. In it's defense, Leffe was a proto-Interbrew aquisition going back to 1977, predating the AB- InBev era by many years, and it's lineage is traced back nearly 800 years, so yes, this is a real thing. Nevertheless, I write about this today because I came into possession of "Pandemic expired stock" of a handful of these brown/abbey dubbel bottles which went out of date in February of 2020 and were locked away in a shuttered store room for 18 months basically putting a year and a half of undisturbed cellaring on them. Why a dark abbey beer would have a near future expiry in the first place is a question that only our benevolent dictators at AB-InBev can answer🤔, nevertheless I was interested to see how it tasted either way. As I suspected, the expiry date was basically immaterial, the carbonation bursting and thick, the dark and bittersweet qualities right on the tip of the tongue. I personally rate the brune miles ahead of the more ubiquitous blonde, and I'm not too familiar with their current process used to approximate an abbey beer outside an abbey setting and how they get that sweetness, but as a purely drinking specimen, you can do a lot, lot worse. #thegreatbeerquest #brownbeer #belgianbeer #Belgium #beerblog #beerreview #beerreviews #beerblog #BeerLove #breweries #monastery #sticky #beerpic #beerbottle

Allendale

#allendale #curlew's #return - The latest from my favorite #northumberland family brewery (out of Hexham, where I've actually been!) who come to market with a mix of classic and newly imagined twists on traditional styles. This red ale is a straight up #malt howitzer, reminiscent of the Irish branch of the red style family -- first sip was full and almost slushy, a result of the nice helping of dark cara, no doubt, and lasted throughout; this bad boy has staying power. Always coming correct with #avantgarde and handsome labeling, I just can't help loving their stuff! 🍺🍺 #thegreatbeerquest #realale #englishbeer #england #britishbeer #britishale #red #beer #øl #ale #beerlover #beerblog #beerreview #Darkbeer #darkale #dark #labels

RedFox

#redfox #realales - As a sort of venus fly trap for any information on proper ale up in these northern climes, I had heard once or twice about Red Fox, a brewery somewhere that makes some sort of selection of something, but I had never seen it or set my sights on it - I did however encounter a few bottles in the wild recently. Holy moly, this is the real stuff, a sumptuous golden ale and rich mild branded under the running name Maggie's, both with burgeoning unstoppable heads. "Real" real ale, the type of stuff that I want to be an evangelist and fanboy for. But how? A little bit of research reveals Red Fox to be an outfit from the Sarpsborg area of southeastern Norway🇳🇴, producing since 2018, with their must popular brews on untappd yielding little more than 200/ low 300 checks in 3 years. No website. No Instagram account (their hashtag has 14 lifetime posts, *1* of which is a public tasting). No updated or working Facebook page. Nothing. No way of knowing if they actually still make beer except by actually finding it somewhere, like it's 1921.🤷‍♂️🍺 The best craft British style real ale in Norway. I'll fanboy it here anyway! I wish I could do more. Tasting

#tasting #freshies - The old EPMD style album cover pose means only one thing - #british beer Posse Cut! I went by #BeerFlag to sample two golden-age style classics off the tank, enough to warm the cockles of your heart; the just named "Low Tide" Oyster Stout and an as-yet unnamed ESB --- yes a new-brew ESB in the heart of Oslo, what a time to be alive, thanks @mattytbrewer for brewing especially for me this summer! (I hugged him)🤗. Low Tide, in the English slang dialects is often used to refer to something that be stinkin', but this beer is just stinkin' delicious. Brewed with real oysters, it has a mild and minerally quality that translates to a fullsome mouthfeel, I am told it's great with the smoked and braised meats and I can't wait to try it when it gets canned in a few weeks for the fall. It surpassed all my expectations since my research indicated most modern Oyster brews eschew the Oysters, but Matty T gave the Mutombo to that mess☝️. Not on his watch! Beer Flag is located across the alley from the rectory of St. Edmund's Church, the seat of the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿Anglican Church of Norway, and Bury St. Edmonds is of course the home town of Greene King. Fittingly, the unnamed ESB hews with truth to a Ruddles Country-esque strong. This is the stuff! . Brewed for the holiday season with loads of East Kent Goldings and some target, I first got the aromatic waft off the tank of plums, fresh bread and dried fruits, a classic fruitcake special bitter that any sometimes publican would be familiar with. Still fermenting, we drank it at about 4%, which made for a light touch (for Norway, not for the ESB terroir of the UK to be sure) and allowed for the full flow, slurpy and living qualities to wash over the experience - it will eventually be 4.5%+ when it's finished and named, but I'm posting a close up on my stories of this thing just to have a look at this fine ale from the #smashing brewers of St. Edmunds alleyway, Matty T and @eugenia_bucciol! #norwegianbeer #britishbeer #britishale #stout #microbrewery #independent #beerblog #beerpics #BeerLove #brewing #brewers #beertanks #øl #BeerFlag #beertastic #beerstagram #brewerylife #instabeer #instagood #esb

Wychwood

#Wychwood #hobgoblin - A #classic , cultured and complex British brown ale that belies it's reputation as a cheap and easy spot gained through it's years of ubiquity, but it is truly a great beer in my personal opinion. I say that, in a roundabout way, since in the early days of #thegreatbeerquest , I usually had a beer once for the tick, and moved on to the next without much reflection as a youthful beer "enthusiast" was wont to do - as a result, after enjoying this beer a now soul-melting 18 years ago this September (immortalized with a handy #2 pencil apparently!), I think before having one last night I may have had it only one or two other times in the intervening *generation*, so it's a rare treat to me, in the very least. A Marston's property, and as I covered recently, the cornerstone of a sub-line of beers under the Hobgoblin name, they dub this a "Ruby Beer" now🤷‍♂️, #marketing is everything I suppose, but it's the same Hobgoblin, and I think I'll just call it Hobgoblin, it's worked just fine this whole time. A somewhat frothy and malty sipping beer with a unique hop character from Styrian, Fuggles and Goldings that keeps it's quite session-y, part of why it has stood the test of time --- time, what a thing, you can see beginning of the etching in there book I scrawled 18 years ago "Good screensaver" - yes I had the Hobgoblin screensaver from the website back when you needed a damned screen saver to save your screen from Y2K and stuff! Anyway -- a great beer by any measure, sometimes availability is a mark of quality, imagine that🤔. #thegreatbeerquest #britishbeer #england #Englishale #camra #realale #ale #beer #TheGreatBeerGuide #beerhunting #greatbeer #BeerList #beerticks #beerblog #brownale #beer #ale #wychwoodhobgoblin #rubybeer #beerlover #beerlifestyle

MarbleBeers

#marblebeers #pint - Known as #metric on the continent for obvious, and smart marketing, reasons, this flagship session pale ale bursts out of the can with sweet and floral flavors and a cracking bitterness and #zest which acts as the handbrake; at 3.9%, pure pub garden session stuff. I am genuinely chuffed by the new generations turn on the classic #pub styles and this #manchester brew is a great addition. #thegreatbeerquest #Ales #ale #microbrewery #paleale #beercan #beerblog #beerthirty #beersnob #craftbeers #beernerd #beerphoto #beercraft #Englishale #england #englishbeer #britishbeer #britishale

ECDahls

#ecdahls #bryggeri - #summertime, and I'm up here in the northern #Trøndelag region of 🇳🇴 having a little walkabout on the links above a #fjord, as one does. #norway, with their cultural penchant for establishment brewing regionalism offers up EC Dahl's to those in proximity to it's home of #trondheim, Norway's third largest city. Perfect for knitting yourself a jacket with which to duff around, the caramel colored classic "Fatøl", or barrel beer style, a firm favorite. ... And of course now a full subsidiary property of Norway's Oslo based monolith brewing cartel, Ringnes - funny how it always seems to work like that! ⛳🏌️ #thegreatbeerquest #regionalbeers #breweries #dahls #beer #øl #trondisk #BeerLove #beerblog #beercans #beersports #instabeer #beerstagram

Huyghe

#huyghe #delirium #tremens - I first had this world famous "frying pan to the temple" beer way back in 2003, ancient days, at the #voldenuit #belgian #beer #bar in West Village, NYC and matter of factly wrote back then: "This beer fucked me up"; and there it sits 18 years later like it was inscribed just yesterday. In the years since, days of expanding options and more imports to try, I have avoided this one for the most part- mostly because of the inscription, why bushwhack my way through an overwhelming beer I've thrown down the gauntlet for already - good on it's merits, but just too much? Anyhow, I recently picked this up to give it a proper run-through. What do you know; it's great on it's merits, but really, just too much. 8.5%, spiked with booze to get a drowsy laborer out the door in a bitter wind and rain- at my vintage these strongs are more properly "enjoyed" in a dark, and this rocket fuel, even one bottle, is now a young man's game, alas (i'm only 39, but this is serious research!). #thegreatbeerquest #GoldenAle #belgianale #belgianbeer #belgique #biere #bier #BeerLove #beerme #BeerList #beerblog #beerstagram #instabeer #deliriumtremens

Wychwood

#Wychwood #hobgoblin #ipa - For better or worse, Oxfordshire's Wychwood has been a Marston's property for the better part of 20 years now, so the true benefit is that when an importer wants to penetrate the market, you can get their stuff here relatively easily, but, as always my gripe redounds to the fickle import cartels, in the years I've been here, Marston's has been visible (including Oyster Stout and even Brakspear) and then gone away for years (except for some straggling Owd Rodger at the booze monopoly), and now they have come back again, and this is certainly the first time I've seen any of the Hobgoblin "range" available for purchase. Yes, the range, might as well grapple with that now; quite obvious to most ale people, Hobgoblin is, and will always be a one off bang-on standard brown ale, but playing off the branding, as is surely the benefit of the initial acquisition full stop, they have added a strong ale version and an IPA under the Hobgoblin umbrella, and though I'm a purist and evangelist for the old ways, sitting here in Norway for the foreseeable, I view this as a net positive, actually - in a world of crazy milkshake and hop bomb beer, the more standard ales in the market place, the better. The other reason I am in on this beer today is that it's actually a really stellar IPA: I bought it next to the Marston's title line Old Empire IPA and drank them consecutively in an apples to apples comparison, and the Hobgoblin really nails the Marston's to the wall here, there's no doubt at all. Rich and big with flowering flavors, travelled very well, I was very satisfied! Great stuff. #thegreatbeerquest #ale #indiapaleale #britishbeer #britishale #Englishale #wychwoodhobgoblin #paleale #realales #realale #brewing #cask #beerlovers #AleLovers #beerblog

Amundsen

#amundsen #BærreLækkert - #bars - A traditional bock on the edge of a double, but not quite. Crafted by the #amundsen #brewery pub, an operation some may know via their popular cans, and enjoyed there, now that things are opened up, in the company of noted life and beer connoisseur @jean_guillaume - father of his own country, in addition to being a classic 🇫🇷. Notable in being a less fancied style to be made for the draft line of a prominent brewery, a total of 41 total checks, but emminently #drinkable, smooth and nutty with a veiled sweetness. It's good to be back🍻. #norwegianbeer #norway #øl #bokkøl #bocks #bockbeer #craftbrewery #craftbeer #Darkbeer #maltbomb #beerinstagram #beerstagram #beerblog #BeerLove

Breweries - First of all, support your local breweries, these guys (and girls) are out here workin it out like James Brown, sweat and dirt; artisans, technicians and grunts all, we are lucky to have them.

Out here by the cabin my family comes to in the summer down on the east side of the Oslo fjord is a brewery that has developed a great reputation and following called Raa. They are a small outfit on the side of the old road to Fredrikstad, 15th century kingdom I may add, in a county called Råde. The brewery has it's own small shop in a mall southwards from here but the brewery itself has beer sales for a convenient *3 hours a week*. In any event, I dropped in today in the middle of the window and had a nice chat with Ole the "shop man", wearing industrial overalls that indicated he did much, much more than operate the till. The place is stacked floor to ceiling with key kegs, yum. Update: 👇 Ole is the head brewer 😆😆😂😂🍻.

I have a few cans to enjoy over the weekend, but wanted to shout Raa Brewery out - I have seen their stuff from time to time in different regions, and it's always dynamite - give them the time of day, it won't disappoint.

WoldTop

#WoldTop #bitter - The beautiful #Brass of the traditional low gravity, #english bitter ale. Is there anything better? I had a conversation with @mines.apint earlier about this brewery, and they are believers - worth a follow all ends up for good measure - nevertheless they are 💯 right on the belief front. At a classic 3.7% this baby is all about the taste: soft and fragrant with a hop essence like the margin running down a piece of notebook paper (remember those?), a result of using Northdown #hops, a taste-forward #british in the challenger family. New ale appearing in the local market here is like a visit from aliens. Market forces and taxes result in Norway being a bit of a wasteland for the bottle conditioned assortment, the style is culturally unfancied, and importers will generally only belly up to the bar with the import tarrifs if they have a sure thing, which results in big breweries or high margin specialty micros and such pervading, but I'm sort of like a venus fly trap for ale, whatever it is, wherever it comes from, and however it shows up, so whoever ported this baby and the other Wold Top bottles: 🙏. #thegreatbeerquest #Englishale #england #britishbeer #britishale #beer #beerpic #beerbottle #beerblog #beermicroblog #microblog #beerhunt #BeerLove #beerme

NorthBrewing

#northbrewing #seasons #reverse #best #bitter - This place is a pub nook for bitter ale fandom, so let me give tons of props to this anachronistic approach - North Brewing is a #yorkshire outfit known for its modern range of IPA and other great styles to suit today's marketplace - but here they opt for an old school, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", 4.3% classic English bitter based on East Kent Goldings with Bullion and Cascade #hops. The result is this radiant technicolor caramel amber and a satisfying bitter with a resonant tang, and from a can, no less. If I'm going to slavishly fawn over 300 year old ales, gotta give credit where credit is due if a new brew is gonna help keep the dream alive👏👏👏, I still await the true modern bitter renaissance, but we are still alive and kicking. #thegreatbeerquest #england #yorkshirebeer #bitterale #realale #ale #britishbeer #beerlife #BeerLove #beerme #beersofinstagram #instabeer #beerblog
